Magnesium and its alloys are considered promising materials for biomedical implants. These materials offer many advantages, including high specific strength, low density, an elastic modulus close to that of bone, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and favorable biomechanical compatibility, and show great potential to replace permanent implants. Key advantages of these materials include reducing the risk of long-term incompatible interactions with body tissues and eliminating the need for a second surgery to remove the implant, which reduces associated side effects. However, the main challenge to the widespread use of these materials is their high corrosion rate in biological environments, which leads to early loss of mechanical integrity and inability to support the tissue healing process. To overcome this limitation, several strategies are being investigated, including designing optimal chemical compositions, applying microstructure modification methods such as grain refinement and heat treatment, and developing reinforced metalmatrix composites. These technologies aim to precisely control the degradation rate and simultaneously improve mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, and extensive research is being conducted in this field. This review article will provide a detailed overview of the research conducted and the progress made in recent years on improving the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys through alloying methods, heat treatment, and the fabrication of magnesium-based metal matrix composites.
